Elevating diversity & inclusion

Driven by core principles

At Blue Cross, we believe it’s important to have a diverse workforce that reflects the populations we serve. The varied experiences and perspectives of our employees helps us assist our members with compassion and empathy, while creating an environment where all employees can reach their full potential. Last year, thirty percent of new hires were people of color. This exceeds the percentage of people of color in our state, which is currently at 15 percent.

We have four main principles that drive our diversity and inclusion work:

  • We recruit talented employees across all cultures and generations, which helps us provide the best quality of care for the diverse populations we serve.
  • We provide all employees with development opportunities that make full use of their gifts, passions and abilities. We want all employees to feel included and able to fully contribute to Blue Cross’ continuing success.
  • We are forward-thinking in our business approach, looking ahead to new generations of Blue Cross customers and ensuring we have a workforce that understands their needs.
  • We are culturally sensitive and respectful of both similarities and differences in our employees and our members. We never lose sight of our common humanity.

Perfect. Again.

Last year, Blue Cross earned a perfect Corporate Equality Index score from the Human Rights Campaign and was named as a Best Place to Work for LGBTQ equality and workplace inclusion. Blue Cross has received this honor in four of the past five years.

Industry-leading support for veterans

Blue Cross is Minnesota’s first health plan designated as a Yellow Ribbon Company for our efforts to hire and retain veterans. We are proud to recognize and thank all our veteran employees — both active and former military members — for their service and dedication to our country.

Employee resource groups

Our employee resource groups (ERGs) help Blue Cross identify solutions that promote health equity and support community outreach efforts. The ERGs assist senior leaders and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion by helping imbed diversity and inclusion principles into all organizational policies, practices and programs. All Blue Cross employees are welcome to participate in any of these organizations.

  • African American Professionals Network (AAPN) promotes a work environment and culture where African Americans and those of African descent can achieve their full potential.
  • Asian Circle is a catalyst for change by sharing the unique perspectives of its members within our company and by being the voice of Blue Cross within the Asian community.
  • Blue Pride is an ERG for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees and their allies. The group provides an education resource for the company, leads LGBTQ community outreach efforts, and contributes to the achievement of business goals.
  • Christian Employee Resource Group (CERG) is an ERG for those who subscribe to the Christian faith or who want to learn more about it while also contributing to Blue Cross business initiatives.
  • Fuerza Azul promotes the professional experiences, ideas, energy and historic contributions of Latinos/Latinas to Minnesota’s cultural and economic development.
  • Generations Blue provides a platform for employees of all ages to develop leadership skills, network with others who share common interests, advance their career goals and help Blue Cross with initiatives aimed at different generational markets.
  • VETS recognizes the contributions of veterans and supports active military employees and their families before, during and after deployment. They also lead our outreach efforts with the military community.
